This project was completed in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, for homeowners Krishna and Jeff, who hired us to transform their backyard into a functional, pet-friendly, and visually refined space.
The design called for converting the existing lawn into two main areas: one with artificial turf for field hockey, and another featuring a custom putting green. The original concrete pool deck was removed and replaced with pavers to create a warmer, more inviting look. Additionally, a shaded area near mature trees was redesigned using decorative concrete pads with artificial turf in between, offering a clean, modern aesthetic.
The landscape design was developed by landscape architect Robert Marzolf, and work began in early April. We started by removing all existing concrete and excavating the sod to a depth of 8 inches. Since the homeowners have dogs, we used a pet-friendly limestone base for the turf, which provides excellent drainage and long-term durability.
All existing sprinklers were carefully reinstalled to ensure irrigation capability during the peak summer months. While artificial turf typically requires little maintenance, sprinklers help cool the surface and prevent odor buildup—an extra step we often take on properties with existing irrigation systems to maintain freshness and functionality.
We used pet-safe infill for the field hockey turf area, while a specialized fiber infill was applied to the putting green to enhance playability and performance.
Special attention was given to the existing gas firepit and Brussels Block paver kitchen area when selecting the new materials. We chose Unilock Beacon Hill pavers and bordered them with 4×8 Holland stone pavers, ensuring the new hardscape tied in seamlessly with the original features for a cohesive and harmonious design.
