This project was completed in South Lyon in 2017, where we worked closely with a homeowner who is an avid golfer during the construction of his new home. The property sits on a corner lot, surrounded by three newly built homes overlooking the yard, making privacy a key concern from the start.
The homeowner already had a golf simulator in his garage and wanted to extend that experience outdoors with a custom backyard putting green. Alongside the putting green, we designed and installed a patio area for entertaining, fully reworked the landscape throughout the property, planted trees for long-term screening, and installed new sod with proper grading to ensure proper drainage and a healthy lawn.
The first picture highlights the original installation process back in 2017. Since then, we have continued maintaining the property year after year. Now, nearly a decade later, the transformation truly stands out. The trees and plantings have matured beautifully, creating a more established and cohesive landscape, while the backyard putting green continues to serve as a focal point of the outdoor space.
Each spring, the ornamental grasses are cut back, but throughout the growing season, the tall zebra grasses—often growing over seven feet high provide natural privacy from the surrounding homes. The result is a secluded, functional, and visually balanced outdoor environment designed for both relaxation and entertainment.
One of the most rewarding parts of this project has been watching the landscape mature over time. Nearly ten years later, the property feels completely established. The privacy plantings have filled in naturally, the ornamental grasses create seasonal screening, and the putting green continues to integrate seamlessly into the overall outdoor living space.
This project is a great example of how thoughtful landscape planning and long-term maintenance can completely transform a newly built property into a private and functional retreat.

A professionally installed putting green can last for many years when properly maintained. Regular maintenance, proper drainage, and quality installation all play a major role in its long-term performance.
Privacy trees, ornamental grasses, and layered landscaping are commonly used to create natural screening in Michigan landscapes. Zebra grasses are especially popular for seasonal privacy and visual texture.
Yes. Installing a putting green during new construction is often ideal because grading, drainage, and landscape planning can all be integrated into the project from the beginning.
