This paver walkway, patio, and retaining wall installation in Sylvan Lake, MI is a standout example of complex landscape design executed in a challenging waterfront environment.
As part of a complete home reconstruction, this project required careful planning to integrate functional hardscape elements while preserving natural features and maintaining uninterrupted views of Pontiac Lake.
Our team at Grow Earth transformed the outdoor space into a multi-level landscape that seamlessly connects the home, deck, and lakefront access.
The scope of this project began along the side of the home, where an existing walkway was removed and replaced with a new custom paver walkway designed to guide movement toward the backyard.
This pathway now leads to a large, multi-level deck, which serves as the central gathering space of the outdoor environment.
Beneath the deck, a newly installed paver patio creates an additional functional area, providing a smooth transition between upper-level living space and the natural lakefront below.
From this patio, a staircase system was constructed to connect directly to the lower-level beach area along Pontiac Lake, ensuring both accessibility and continuity throughout the property.
One of the most complex aspects of this Sylvan Lake landscape project was the significant elevation change across the property.
The site featured:
To address these challenges, our team implemented a carefully engineered solution that balanced structural stability with natural aesthetics.
All work was completed within a tight construction zone, including working around an existing deciduous tree that provides valuable shade to the upper deck area. Preserving this tree was a key part of maintaining the character and usability of the space.
To manage the elevation change and create safe access to the lakefront, a large retaining wall and step system was installed using High Format wall units.
This system serves as the backbone of the landscape, providing:
The integration of retaining walls and steps allows for smooth vertical transitions while enhancing the overall design with a bold, architectural presence.
The paver patio beneath the deck was designed to maximize usability while complementing the surrounding hardscape features.
This area acts as a central transition point, connecting:
The newly installed paver walkway along the side of the home ensures a clean and structured approach to the backyard, replacing outdated pathways with a more functional and visually appealing solution.
Together, the patio and walkway create a cohesive and well-connected outdoor living layout.
To soften the structural elements and enhance the overall environment, professional landscape plantings were incorporated throughout the project.
These plantings were strategically placed to:
Special attention was given to maintaining clear sightlines to Pontiac Lake, while also preserving the visual connection from the lake back toward the home.
Balancing these views was essential in creating a space that feels open, connected, and harmonious with its waterfront setting.
This project reflects a full-scale landscape transformation in Sylvan Lake, Michigan, completed alongside the reconstruction of the home.
Every element—from the paver walkway and patio installation to the retaining wall and staircase system—was designed to work together as part of a unified vision.
The result is a highly functional, visually striking, and structurally sound multi-level outdoor space that enhances both everyday living and the overall value of this waterfront property.
